UConn's Jessica Shufelt Enjoyed A Golden Weekend In Front of Goal

UConn 3 (Prendergast 37′, Shufelt 57′, 93′) – 2 (Nairn 2′, Brock 67′) Penn State [aet]

Crisis? What crisis? Well, that certainly could be the outlook for UConn after their fifth straight extra time match to open the season. But like on Friday, good things came to those Husky fans who waited as Jessica Shufelt’s fabulous weekend was capped off with an extra time winner, her second of the afternoon. Shufelt would grab the winner after taking a pass from Elise Fugowski and curling a shot into the top-right corner past Penn State keeper Krissy Tribbett. Things hadn’t looked so rosy for the hosts after just a minute and change when Christine Nairn had taken advantage of a misclearance to half-volley a shot into the back of the net to give PSU an early lead. Danielle Toney’s chip a handful of minutes later hit the bar as the Nittany Lions threatened to explode with offense early. UConn weathered the storm and nearly got back to level terms through Annie Yi who hit the bar from twenty-yards. Devin Prendergast would finally level the tie, crushing a volley into the upper-right corner of the goal from twenty yards just under ten minutes before the half. Shufelt would grab her first of the day just before the hour mark from the edge of the area to give UConn a 2-1 lead. Hayley Brock would silence the crowd ten minutes later by finishing a slide rule pass from freshman Maya Hayes, equalizing the match at 2-2. The Huskies were truly on top for most of the match, enjoying a 25-13 shot advantage and an 8-4 edge in shots on goal. This was the Huskies’ first victory over Penn State in their history. While UConn has truly put their early season jitters to bed, Penn State now faces a painful reality check after their fourth straight defeat and fifth straight match without a win.

LSU 0 – 1 (DeTuro 68′) Virginia Tech (in Winston-Salem, North Carolina)

Virginia Tech snapped a three game losing streak, picking up a crucial win on Sunday morning against an LSU team that was, once more, thoroughly stifled on offense. Katie DeTuro would net the only goal of the match for the ACC side in the sixty-eighth minute of play, heading home a free kick taken from about five yards outside of the area by Julia Goldsworthy. For the second straight match, the Tigers had the dubious distinction of recording more bookings (2) than shots on goal (1). LSU’s frontline of Addie Eggleston, Carlie Banks, and Kaley Blades were held to one shot overall, an off-target effort from Eggleston. The loss by the Tigers’ was their third in a row as they fell in this de facto third place game in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

UC Santa Barbara 0 – 1 (Kelly 72′) Marquette (in Minneapolis, Minnesota)

Marquette broke their recent duck against mid-majors, although they were made to fight against a spirited UC Santa Barbara side. Maegan Kelly would grab the crucial goal for Marquette in the seventy-second minute from close range after finishing off a team move with the help of Lindsey Page and Rachel Brown. Marquette nearly opened the scoring early in the second half when Taylor Madigan had a shot ring off the bar. The Gauchos missed out on a late equalizer as a header from Kailyn Kugler with less than five minutes to play was knocked off the line by a defender. While Marquette held a decided advantage in shots, the shots on goal category was much closer, with the Golden Eagles only holding a 7-5 advantage.

Yale 0 – 1 (Hilbrands 54′) Illinois

After a frustrating extra time defeat on Friday afternoon, Illinois got back to their winning ways with a narrow victory over Yale. Jordan Hilbrands was on hand to head in the winner off a corner kick after Yale keeper Ayana Sumiyasu had done well to rise and save Krystin Miller’s initial headed shot. Sumiyasu had made some big saves to keep the score knotted at zero earlier, denying Vanessa DiBernardo and Niki Read in short order. All three keepers, Alexandra Kapicka and Steph Panozzo for Illinois, and Sumiyasu for Yale, did well to keep the match a low scoring affair with the Illinois keepers combining for seven saves and Sumiyasu stopping eight Illini shots. Kapicka kept Illinois’ lead intact in the seventy-first minute tipping a ball from Friday heroine Becky Brown over the bar and stopping Brown again ten minutes later.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee 3 (Hagen 10′, Gillaspie 27′, Thompson 34′) – 2 (Heyboer 47′, Stander 53′) Michigan State

Wisconsin-Milwaukee scored early and scored often en route to taking a 3-0 lead into the half but had to hold on for dear life in the face of a Michigan State charge that just ran out of steam in the second half. Helen Steinhauser set up Sarah Hagen for the opener with a long ball that the powerful striker was able to run onto and deposit to the far post while holding the defense off. Makenzie Gillaspie would head home a corner from Steinhauser some seventeen minutes later to double the advantage. Keara Thompson would grab the match winner seven minutes later off another set piece after Hagen had flicked on a long free kick, letting Thompson finish past Jill Flietstra in the Michigan State goal. Laura Heyboer would get one back almost immediately after the break after skinning a defender and beating UWM keeper Leslie Deebach. Olivia Stander cut into the deficit further after finishing off a through ball from Megan Pines, who had also served up Heyboer’s goal. There was to be no third for the Spartans though, as the visitors paid the price for a poor first half. Unsurprisingly, the Panthers were all over the Spartans on the stats sheet in the first half, with things evening out considerably in the second half. Gillaspie was the shining star for the Panthers with four shots on goal, including the home side’s second of the rampant first half.

South Carolina 1 (Petroni 20′) – 1 (McCarter 37′) Arizona State

The mystique of The Graveyard continued to dull as South Carolina were fortunate to escape with a draw against Arizona State on Sunday afternoon. Taylor McCarter would restore parity and end the afternoon’s scoring in the thirty-seventh minute of action, rifling a twenty yard shot into the back of the net after a corner kick had bounced her way. Maria Petroni had given SC a lead after twenty minutes by heading home a cross from Christine Watts. The home side nearly had a chance to win it in the final minute, but Danielle Au couldn’t make contact with a Watts cross in the area. After the first forty-five minutes, the Sun Devils limited their opponents to just a single shot on goal and on the day, held dangerous forward Kayla Grimsley to just one on-target effort. Mollie Patton made seven crucial saves for the Gamecocks, including five in the second half to get the game to extra time. The Carolina defense was buoyed by the return of injury victims Ellen Fahey and Kortney Rhodes, though the latter was limited to reserve minutes.

Notre Dame 2 (Henderson 24′, Augustin 25′) – 0 Texas Tech

Notre Dame used a two goal burst of offense within a minute in the first half to overcome a game Texas Tech side in South Bend. Taylor Knaack nearly scored right before the quarter hour mark after a cross evaded the gloves of TT keeper Colleen Pitts, but the Red Raider defense was on hand to sweep the ball clear. Melissa Henderson would take advantage of continued pressure by the Golden Domers, pouncing on a cross of her own that had been blocked before taking it down herself and beating Pitts with a blast. Rose Augustin would make Tech pay for a defensive lapse in judgment seconds later after she was left unmarked thirty-five yards from goal. One blast into the top-left corner later, and the match was all but over as a spectacle. Texas Tech came closest in the second half as Hayley Haagsma saw her header from a corner pushed away and cleared. Henderson would miss a second goal by fractions, pushing a diving header just wide with nearly fifteen minutes left to play. Notre Dame enjoyed a slim advantage in shots on goal, 6-4, while holding a major advantage in shots (19-10) and corners (8-2). Nikki Weiss scored yet another clean sheet as Notre Dame goes into next weekend’s UCLA clash having not conceded in their first four matches.

Minnesota 2 (Eckstrom 53′, Rouse 71′) – 1 (Held 80′) San Diego

San Diego’s giant killing act came to an abrupt halt as they were thoroughly outplayed by Minnesota in Minneapolis on Sunday afternoon. Molly Rouse would seal the game winner with a little under twenty minutes left after San Diego keeper Courtney Parson made a rare mistake, not getting to a Katie Bethke free kick and letting Rouse head home. After a scoreless first half, Shari Eckstrom put her fourth of the year in with a finish from ten yards after an assist from Rouse. Brittany Held threatened to cause so more drama with a consolation goal in the eightieth minute after a rebound from a deflection off a defender before beating Cat Parkhill in the Minnesota goal. Parsons made seven saves on the afternoon in another strong effort in goal, but the Toreros couldn’t muster enough to down another big school in 2010.

Northwestern 1 (Dagley 55′) – 1 (Bonnick 9′) Missouri

Northwestern and Missouri fought to a 1-1 draw that likely did little for either’s postseason ambitions in Evanston on Sunday. Alysha Bonnick finished off a cross from Kendra Collins in the ninth minute to give Missouri and early lead. Caroline Dagley would equalize ten minutes after the break latching onto a long ball from keeper Carolyn Edwards, and smashing a shot into the back of the net from distance. Edwards was a shining star in goal for the Wildcats, making ten saves on the afternoon. The biggest save for the Wildcats was by a defender though, as Kendra Collins had a twenty-five yard shot cleared off the line after Edwards had come out to deal with some danger. Kate Allen was everpresent for NW, putting four shots on goal but was ultimately unable to beat Mizzou keeper Jessica Gwin, including on a shot late in extra time that just missed wide. Missouri’s physical style told on the stat sheet, holding a 22-6 advantage on fouls, but only recorded one booking on the afternoon. The Tigers are now winless through five matches.

Oklahoma 1 (Palmer PK 4′, Allek SENT OFF 39′) – 1 (Brown PK 32′) Colorado College

Oklahoma and Colorado College fought to a 1-1 stalemate in Norman on Sunday afternoon, with both goals coming from the spot. The match proved to be an ill-tempered affair, with five bookings, thirty-two fouls, and the Sooners’ Lauren Allek being shown the gate in the thirty-ninth minute. Whitney Palmer converted her penalty after being felled in the area to take the lead. Dria Hampton had almost given Oklahoma the lead just a minute earlier with a shot off the post. Samantha Howell nearly doubled the Sooner lead at the quarter hour mark, ringing a shot off the bar. Tiffany Brown would bring the scores back level at the thirty-second minute mark, putting her penalty past OU keeper Kelsey Devonshire. The stats leveled out after the dismissal, but CC keeper Caitlin Hulyo was the only keeper tested in extra time, making two saves to keep the draw intact. In all, Hulyo had a brilliant day, making eleven saves.

Purdue 0 – 1 (Ohai 10′) USC (in Fullerton, California)

USC did what USC generally does so well, grinding out a 1-0 win against Purdue in Fullerton, California on Sunday morning. Megan Ohai tallied the match winner in the tenth minute to score her first goal of the season. A long Karter Haug free kick befuddled Purdue keeper Carianne Betts, letting Ohai ghost in and head home to give the Trojans a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The Trojan defense were the true stars, keeping Purdue from seriously threatening, with the Boilermakers tallying a single shot on goal throughout. In today’s edition of Ashli Sandoval Watch, she’s still missing, not making an appearance for the Trojans who were just fine after Ohai’s goal.

Wake Forest 2 (Stengel 14′, Park 41′) – 0 Kentucky

Wake Forest brought a streaking Kentucky side back to Earth with a dominant 2-0 performance in Winston-Salem. Rachel Nuzzolese had been Wake’s leading freshman thus far but it was fellow first-year player Katie Stengel who nabbed the match winner against the Wildcats. Jackie Logue drilled the bar from twenty-four yards, and Stengel knocked the rebound in for a 1-0 lead for the home side. Marisa Park would double the lead with a header at the far post, knocking in a cross from Alisha Woodson to all but finish the tie off before the half. Kentucky were close to a consolation with a few minutes left when Taylor Ray’s thirty yard drive hit the post and bounced clear. The Demon Deacons held a 21-3 advantage in shots, although the shots on goal was a more respectable 6-1.

Washington 1 (Pele 80′) – 1 (Williams 34′) Wisconsin

In a match that was part demolition derby, part desperate duel, Wisconsin and Washington ended up with a share of the spoils after a late equalizer by Kendyl Pele. Kellye Joswick whipped in a free kick and Pele got onto the end of it, heading home and giving the Huskies a deserved equalizer after a fitful first half for the home side. Canadian freshman Kodee Williams had dumped Washington in a hole going into the half after putting home a deflection to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead. Both teams switched keepers from their last match, Washington going with Jorde LaFontaine-Kussman, while Wisconsin opted for Michele Dalton in net. The schools combined for twenty-eight fouls and five bookings, three of them coming in the two frames of extra time as both sides clawed for a potential golden goal that never came.

Other Matches

-Renee Washington had both of La Salle’s goals, the second coming in extra time as the Explorers beat Central Connecticut State, 2-1.

-Allie Riczo scored two goals for Cleveland State, including the match winner as the Vikings took down Canisius, 3-1.

-Jen Pfeiffer scored goals number four and five of the season for herself as her Saint Joseph’s team eased past NJIT, 3-0.

-Ariel Cook scored twice, including a header in the eighty-eighth minute, as Northern Colorado came from behind to beat The Citadel, 2-1.

-Long Island’s Caitlin Meadows had two goals and an assist for the Blackbirds as they had little trouble with Longwood, winning 3-0.

-Cornell got a brace each from Mary Keroack and Megan Crowell as they crushed Delaware State, 7-0. Rachel Nichols also had a pair of assists for the winners.

-Florida Gulf Coast stunned Arkansas with fifty-one seconds left, getting a Michelle Kuhnen goal to down their much more fancied opponents, 1-0.

-Southern Illinois-Edwardsville’s Kristen Dailey notched two goals, including the match winner with just over six minutes to play to lead a 4-3 win over IPFW who got two goals themselves from Lisa Underwood.

-Casey Clark scored the second of her two goals with twenty-six seconds left in extra time to give Indiana State a dramatic 2-1 win against Eastern Illinois.

-Liz Carlos walked away with the match ball with a hat trick for Lehigh as the Mountain Hawks held on to top Quinnipiac, 3-2.

-Carolyne Nellis had two assists for Maine as the Black Bears won in extra time, downing Sacred Heart, 3-2.

-Rachel Wannek had two goals and an assist for Mississippi State as they shackled South Alabama in a 3-1 win. Leanna Baldner had two assists for the Bulldogs.

-Nadia Aboulhosn scored a seven minute hat trick for NC State as they ran riot over Loyola (MD), 6-0. Kristina Argiroff also had a brace, while Jennie Krauser assisted on the first three goals for the Wolfpack.

-Caitlin Blosser had assists on all three Princeton goals as the Tigers eased past Seton Hall, 3-1.

-Katie Jackson had a pair of assists for Central Florida as they recovered from conceding in the third minute to overwhelm VCU, 4-1.

-Erika Lum scored twice for Brown as they held Colgate without a shot on goal, winning 3-0.

-Chelsea Small scored a brace as Idaho downed Utah Valley State, 3-0.

-Chelsea Klotz and Noelle Pineiro each had a pair of goals for South Florida as they had little trouble beating in-state rivals Stetson, 4-0.

-Stephanie Rose had a goal and two assists from off the bench for UNC Wilmington as they defeated Gardner Webb, 4-0.

-Rosaly Petriello dispatched a penalty in the ninety-eighth minute to score her second of the match and give Alabama a 2-1 win over Chattanooga in extra time. It really never should have come to that, with the Tide outshooting their smaller opponents, 33-9.

-Arkansas-Pine Bluff decimated Centenary, 7-0, with Jade West grabbing two goals and two assists on the afternoon. Nicole Parks-Powell also had a pair of goals, while Silvia Fuentes contributed two assists.

-Yasmin Bunter struck twice for Francis Marion as they notched a 2-1 win against East Tennessee State.

-Meghan Gibbons scored a hat trick from off the bench and Nicole Locandro added a brace as Georgia overpowered state rivals Georgia State, 5-1.

-Cal forward and Hermann Trophy contender Alex Morgan scored a hatful for the Bears, upping her total to seven on the season and helping Cal rout Hawaii, 8-1. Karin Omarsdottir chipped in with two assists off the bench.

-Gilda Doria had two assists for Duke as the Blue Devils put the hammer down against High Point, winning 5-0.

-Tanya Taylor scored twice as UC Irvine defeated Eastern Washington, 3-1.

-Courtney Breen had a pair of goals and Dana Bergstrom had two assists for Hofstra as they crushed Fordham, 4-1.

-Brittany Kindzierski scored her fifth and sixth of the season and added an assist later as UTEP jumped all over Houston Baptist, 5-1.

-Kansas suffered more Sunday humiliation, being outshot 18-4 by Illinois State as the Redbirds took a 2-1 win, fueled by two goals from Jessica Carlson.

-Becca Massip scored twice in the second half as Jacksonville eased past ten man Winthrop, 3-0.

-Senior forward Rachel King netted a hat trick as Louisiana Tech crushed McNeese State, 4-0. Kiva Gresham assisted on King’s first two goals for the Bulldogs.

-In what was likely the wildest match of the day, TCU survived having starting keeper Kelsey Walters sent off in the twenty-seventh minute to stage a comeback from 3-1 down and win 4-3. The Horned Frogs would get assists from Chelsea Cody on the equalizer and match winner in the eightieth minute.

-Krista Lopez completed Oklahoma State’s successful weekend with a pair of goals as the Cowgirls rolled past Murray State, 4-2. The Pokes were up 4-0 after fifty-three minutes but conceded a pair cheaply to make the scoreline look a lot closer than the match really was.

-Anisa Guajardo scored once and assisted twice as Pepperdine crushed Detroit, 4-0.

-Kelsey Lord scored both goals for San Jose State as the Spartans edged past Cal State Bakersfield, 2-1.

-Maiya Cooper scored twice for Southeastern Louisiana as the Lions outshot Southern, 42-0 (!!!). SELA won the match, 4-0.

-Jordan King netted twice from the spot to lead Stephen F. Austin to a 3-1 win over Louisiana-Lafayette.

-Kerri Reid had a pair of assists for Tennessee Tech as the Golden Eagles took out UNC Asheville, 3-1.

-Jocelyn Murdoch bagged a brace off the bench for Austin Peay, but the Lady Govs still fell well short against Troy, losing 5-2. The Trojans got two goals each from Mary Morris and Cecilia Thorngren in the blowout.

-Memphis decimated Arkansas-Little Rock, 6-0, getting two goals and an assist from Ashley Berra. Taylor Isenhower also had two assists for the victors.

-After going into the half level with Cal State Northridge, UCLA took out some frustration in the second forty-five minute stanza, getting three goals to spur a 4-1 win. Lauren Barnes had two assists for the Bruins.

-Iowa got a goal and two assists from Stefani Campbell off the bench as they whacked state rivals Northern Iowa, 6-0.

-Julie Vigliotti walked away with a pair of goals and an assist as Wagner thumped Holy Cross, 4-1.

-Washington State coach Matt Potter was ejected in the thirty-seventh minute, but Micaela Castain probably eased his pain with a hat trick off the bench to help Wazzu take out Weber State, 4-1.

-Arizona’s in form striker Renae Cuellar was on target twice as the Wildcats trumped Cal Poly, 4-2.
