2009 US Open: Kim Clijsters reaches final after Serena Williams was defaulted
Kim Clijsters reached the U.S. Open final after Serena Williams was defaulted on the final point.
Clijsters won the match 6-4 7-5, which ended in controversy when the American was called for a foot-fault on a second serve to go match point down. An angry Williams argued with the lineswoman who reported her for verbal abuse.
Having already received a warning earlier in the match for smashing a racket, Williams was handed an automatic point penalty for a second violation which gave the Belgian the match.
Clijsters became the first mother to reach a grand slam final since Evonne Goolagong achieved the feat at Wimbledon in 1980.

I was sad when I heard the foul language Serena used when yelling at a line judge. She needs to control her emotions on the court. It's too bad, this will hurt her image.

The only thing that is sad about Serena's outburst is that she had to go there. THERE WAS NO FOOT FAULT! It was quite obvious that the cards were stacked against her and Venus. In Venus' first match at the Open she had 6 foot faults called. Venus even stopped to question the calls. Serena had a foot fault called in her second match. Another called after hitting an ace against Clisters. In short, the only players being called for foot faults were the Williams Sisters. When will tennis ever be just that...tennis. Play the game fair and nothing would ever happen. Regardless of the outcome. I am both a Serena and a Clijsters fan. Tennis need not be black and white. Tennis would not have elevated to it's current status if it wasn't for the Williams sisters. They actually turned it into an athletic sport versus a prissy game of hitting balls that it once was.
McEnroe was a tirant in every match he has played. He ends up being a tennis commentator. Fernando Gonzales broke his racket hours before Serena's match....no penalty imposed. Every tennis player has broken rackets and have had confrontations with the linesman.
I support Serena 100%. Too bad that it had to happen!

While there is more than a grain of truth to this: "Tennis would not have elevated to it's current status if it wasn't for the Williams sisters. They actually turned it into an athletic sport versus a prissy game of hitting balls that it once was."
"She *had* to go there" is a non sequitur. Foot fault or no, Serena could easily have contested the call without all the excess.
Fortunate for Serena that, the following night, serial dimwit Kanye West took the media spotlight away from her misdeed.
