I'm actually ok with this news. One, it's better than folding altogether. Two, it's an Olympic year so the big names, the women who would bring many fans to the stadiums wouldn't be around anyway. I think it would have been an emotionally and financially distressful season. Third, I am super busy this spring and summer, so pretty much just watching the Olympics was all I was going to be able to commit to. :)
I think WPS execs made a good decision. Well a good decision in response to a not-so-good one to allow magicJack owner Dan Borislow to purchase and move the Washington Freedom. (Is it weird that I always think of that cartoon characters Boris Badenov when I hear Borislow's name??)
No Boston Breakers for me--or anyone else--in 2012

I agree that this development doesn't necessarily mean the sky is falling.
First, the olympics are going to account for the huge majority of face time to the larger public anyway, and that remains intact. Yes, the grass-roots exposure is diminished, but it was going to lack star power for the most part anyway, given the limited participation of the sport's biggest names.
Second, it may give the league as a whole a chance to re-evaluate, plan and strategize for the greater good and long term success.
The one concern I have is the league essentially throwing Borislow under the bus. I'm not convinced this is his "fault" per se, but that the league will use that as an excuse to explain away its own operational shortcomings.
Using this respite to seek and secure new investors in the wake of world cup/olympic exposure will be the difference in this league's survival.
