Round one of the FIM Women’s World Championship
started today from the Bulgarian race track of Sevlievo where Larissa Papenmeier took the
pole and defending Champion Stephanie Laier won the opening heat.
After clocking the pole Teka Suzuki Europe World MX2’s Papenmeier was all set on a
great first moto as she was quicker than defending Champion Laier and young gun
Chiara Fontanesi.
When the gate dropped at heat one Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Laier led the pack
into the first corner followed by Fontanesi and Livia Lancelot while Papenmeier had a bad
start.
Laier pulled away from the rest of the pack leaving Fontanesi alone in second as the
two went on to take first and second respectively.
It was a harder race for third placed Papenmeier recovering from the bottom of the
top five to a valuable third.
American Ashley Fiolek of LS Motors Honda took fourth ahead of Diga KTM’s Franke.
2008 Women’s World Champion Lancelot instead dropped down to an eventual sixth and
missed out on a top five finish due to Franke’s overtaking move at the last lap.
