McCall Zerboni

It’s always great to see professional athletes support causes by showing their famous faces on a poster, commercial, or news article, but it’s even greater to see an athlete pair up with a fan and actually take action.

That’s exactly what former Atlanta Beat fan favorite McCall Zerboni is doing with five-year-old Emma Bayer and her parents, Dave and Carey, by starting the “MZ & Emmers – Soccer Kicks Breast Cancer” for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

McCall and Emma became great friends during last season of Women’s Professional Soccer when McCall played for the Beat and the Bayer family attended every game. The relationship grew strong enough to where McCall attended Bayer family events like dinners, and birthday parties.

Dave shared the story on how the idea for the Soccer Kicks Breast Cancer Fundraiser got started. “She was over for dinner one night last season, and I learned that McCall supported the cause because she lost an aunt to breast cancer,” he said. “I put that in the back of my head and searched for something we could do. I found a shopping center that was having a Susan G. Komen event. We went with 4 other Beat players and raffled off a couple of items.”

Dave has taken his support for the cause to the next level even now that McCall has gone to Buffalo, NY to play for the Western New York Flash, allowing them to keep a close bond over many miles that separate them.

He has asked a slew of players to design and autograph one of their sports bras to auction off on eBay. Each one will be auctioned separately with a starting bid of $20. All proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

These players include WPS and W-League stars in addition to Icelandic players, and players that we will see in the World Cup less than a week from today such as Brazil’s Marta, 13 Canadian players including Christine Sinclair, Karina LeBlanc, Erin McLeod and Stephanie Labbe, New Zealand’s Ali Riley, Swedish star Caroline Seger, and the USA’s own Heather Mitts and Carli Lloyd.
