Perth, Australia – We’re featuring Shannon Drucker’s story, a participant in Kristin Boese’s recently concluded kite camp in Australia. Besides Kristin’s hectic training schedule, producing kiteboarding/kitesurfing training videos and writing books, she also manages to produce kite camps through KB4Girls. The kite camps are held in different kite spots around the world. Prior to kiting, Shannon was a fanatical cross-country mountain biker who raced in the state series and won every event. Today, she is a wife, mother to two gorgeous boys Taj 4.5 years- and Jayden 1.5 year-old and is an enthusiast kiteboarder.

When we received the story from Ms. Kristin Boese, 9x kiteboarding World Champion about one of her proteges, Shannon Drucker, I smiled from ear to ear. Her story is simply inspiring and breaks the mold of the typical life program for wifehood and motherhood. I personally believe that women do not have to give up who they are and the things that they love should they choose to raise a family. Building a successful career and having fun should not end when a woman or a man enters into familyhood. In fact, it should double, triple. Perhaps the secret is finding that right significant life partner. This is my personal belief. Shannon Drucker is living it.

Shannon Drucker, 33-years old, mother of two boys
Shannon Drucker was born in Bendigo, Australia where she lived with her parents and studied to become a fitness instructor. In Bendigo there is no wind or water. The place is surrounded by farms and bush land. There are many mountains and hills for bike riding. Shannon’s parents always encouraged her with sports and they are quite active outdoorsy types themselves. Prior to kiteboarding, Shannon’s water sport was waterskiing. The discovery of kitesurfing years later became her cheap and environmentally friendly alternative to waterskiing! No boat or petrol needed, just wind, kite and board.
Fast-forward in Perth 10-years later, while competing at a cross-country mountain biking event she met her future husband, Nathan Ducker. Nath was a windsurfer when they met. He traveled up and down the coast searching for epic waves and wind. He learned to kitesurf the year they met. The following year, Nath convinced Shannon to give kiting a swirl. There was no looking back for Shannon.

Nowadays Shannon’s life evolves around her two gorgeous boys Taj 4.5 and Jayden 1.5. Traveling up and down the Australian coast kitesurfing, whenever the family finds the opportunity. Besides being a wife, mother and kiter, she also run a small web and graphic design business www.freshwebmedia.com.au. Her competitive spirit in mountain biking has found its way into kitesurfing. Shannon recently competed in the Australian National Championships and came second in the freestyle competition. “This would not have been possible without the encouragement from my husband, my father and Kristin Boese. I am so happy with my result, especially being a mother of two very young boys.”

Shannon Drucker, KB4Girls Kite Camp participant
When Shannon got wind of the KB4 Girls kite camps hosted by Kristin, she signed-up for two reasons: the opportunity to be around like-minded women and improve her kitesurfing skills under the auspices of a multi-World Champion. Kristin teaches the kite camps herself and is tailored to enthusiasts who want to try to go pro. There are kite camps that are tailored for beginner kiters too.

After her experience at Kristin’s kite camp, Shannon shares that “I started landing hooked in front rolls to blind raleys. I also perfected raleys to toeside with a surface pass. Kristin also kept insisting and pushing the group to try new tricks.” Kristin’s clinics helps prepare enthusiasts during the competitions by sending her participants out at the right time, in the right spot and by always making sure her campers had the right competition rash vest and were motivated for their next heat! Shannon adds “the best parts of the kite camps were the motivation from Kristin and the participants.” Always pushing themselves and encouraging each other to learn new tricks.

“I have made some long lasting friendships at the clinics and will encourage all of my Perth kiter friends to participate with me next year.”
