Finally, a woman will get the chance to walk in Jordan’s shoes. UConn alum and Minnesota Lynx rookie, Maya Moore, is the first female hoops star to sign with the Michael Jordan brand to promote its shoes and sports accessories. In her upcoming season with the Lynx, Moore will rock Jordan kicks, a perfect compliment to her #23 jersey.

“Joining team Jordan is an accomplishment on another level,” mentioned Moore. “It’s almost like when you’re choosing to go to college, you want to surround yourself with the best. That’s why I went to UConn, and I want to do the same thing now that I’m a pro. I had the opportunity to be a part of Team Jordan and I jumped at that opportunity.”

Maya joins an elite group of male athletes who are currently Jordan brand representatives. As one of the best female college basketball players ever to play, her very long list of accolades includes two national titles at UConn and a record 90-game winning streak. But now the #1 draft pick of 2011 hopes to be more than just a star forward for the Lynx. She hopes to help elevate the visibility of the WNBA.

“The league is growing,” said Moore. “Hopefully I can fulfil my role in this family and make sure to represent well and to reach not only the female fans but all fans and I think this just makes us more of a complete team.”

Back in September, history was made when Va$htie Kola became the first woman to design a shoe for Nike Air Jordan. In the future, Maya also hopes to be involved in the design process of her own Jordan shoes. It’s a step in the right direction for female athletes and female sports fans. Congratulations to Maya on this accomplishment, we can’t wait to see what’s in store!

The 2011 WNBA season tips off on June 3rd.
