The father of former Olympic figure skater Nancy Kerrigan has died and Kerrigan’s brother Mark has been charged with assault, according to Massachusetts police.

Daniel Kerrigan died on Sunday after what authorities are calling a “violent struggle” with his son. Many will remember Kerrigan from footage of him carrying Nancy to the locker room after she was attacked prior to her performance in the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. The assault nearly derailed her Olympic chances.

Mark Kerrigan, 45, was arrested and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on an elderly person and causing serious bodily injury. He pled guilty and his bail was set at $10,000.

According to The Boston Globe, Mark was described by his attorney as “an unemployed plumber and an Army veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who regularly receives counseling.”

Police said Mark Kerrigan appeared intoxicated when he was found on a couch in the basement of the home and was “belligerent and combative” but coherent when questioned. Officers used pepper spray to subdue him and eventually arrested him.

“He stated that he wanted to use the phone and his father would not let him. He said he struggled with his father and put his hands around his father’s neck and his father fell to the floor,” the arresting officer wrote.

Mark Kerrigan told officers that he believed his father was “faking it,” according to the report.

Mark is no stranger to assault charges. He was recently released from prison, where he had been since May, 2006, on a separate assault charge, according to the records. And his “long criminal record – including arrests for assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, malicious destruction and violation of a restraining order” – was brought up in his arraignment when bail was determined.

An autopsy has been scheduled and results are expected to take up to two weeks. Services for Daniel Kerrigan will take place on Thursday.
