In December, it was announced that for the first time in history, the best tackle football teams in the sport would now reside under one umbrella: The Women's Football Alliance (WFA). The best teams in the Independent Women's Football League (IWFL), including the D.C. Divas, Bay Area Bandits, Boston Militia, Chicago Force, Dallas Diamonds, Kansas City Tribe, New York Sharks, Pittsburgh Passion, and the San Diego Surge, all made the decision to move to the WFA this winter. They're now three weeks into their first season and have been battling current top WFA teams such as the Columbus Comets, Philadelphia Liberty Belles, Lone Star Mustangs, St. Louis Slam, and the West Michigan Mayhem.
Thus far, the D.C. Divas are looking to have handled the transition the smoothest. The Divas opened their season with a bang on April 2nd by dominating last year's IWFL champions, the Boston Militia, to whom they'd lost three times last season, including the Eastern Conference Championship game. The Divas' star tailback and former track athlete, Kenyetta Grigbsy, carried 23 times for 243 yards and 3 touchdowns. Grigsby credited teammate Okiima Pickett, who switched from tailback to fullback this year, with providing the blocks that allowed her to get that yard total. The Divas went on to down the Keystone Assault 55-6 last weekend and then yesterday shutout the Philadelphia Liberty Belles 20-0.
Other teams to watch out for:
