TRACK AND FIELD: PRO ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARDS

I started doing college athlete of the week awards because no one else does it on a national level. No one does a worldwide athlete of the week award for pros, either. Sounds like a job for me! Here we goandhellip; Womenandrsquo;s athlete of the week: Nadine Manduuml;ller, Germany At the European Cup Winter Throwing on Sunday, Manduuml;ller twice extended her PR and ended up with 68.89 meters, the best mark on record since 2004 and the third-best of the millenium. Itandrsquo;s the seventh-best throw in March or earlier andmdash; and, more significantly, itandrsquo;s the best this early in the year since worldwide random out-of-competition dope testing programs began back in the early 90s. Manduuml;ller, the 2011 World Championships silver medalist, has never won a major international championship. Besides last year, her only international medals were in age-group competition, in 2003 and 2004. Will 2012 be the year she gets it together? This is a fine start, no doubt. LSU FOOTBALL TRYING OUT A FEMALE KICKER

Several men in my life* have sent me word of a former female soccer player at LSU who is trying out to be a kicker on the football team.Obviously this is not soooo out of the ordinary. Many people know of the story of Katie Hnida, who actually entered college with intentions of being a kicker on the football team. After a troubling and#40;to put it mildlyand#41; time at Colorado, Hnida went to New Mexico where she became the first woman to put points on the scoreboard in a DI football game.So Mo Isom is not going to have that "first" opportunity. But it seems that she has a lot more support than Hnida received and#40;at least when she was at Coloradoand#41;. LSU coach Les Miles is giving her a fair shot at a spot on the team. She has had access to LSU football staff as she goes through the tryout process. What I find interesting is the reporting on the story. This is the headline from one of the links I received. It is from The Advocate, which seems to be a local paper out of Baton Rouge. L [Read More]

HOW MANAGING FOOD ALLERGIES HELPS DREW BREES PERFORM BETTER AND RECOVER QUICKLY

If you could make one change to your diet that made you feel a thousand times better every day what would it be? For those suffering from food allergies, the answer lies in cutting those foods out of their diet. Symptoms of food allergies range from life threatening anaphylactic shock to itching of the mouth, hives and rashes. But for me, and apparently Drew Brees as well, eating those foods we are allergic to means you feel like you youandrsquo;ve been hit head on by a Mack Truck and#40;or in Brees case, maybe a 320 lb. O-Linemanand#41;. Brees said he noticed an amazing difference in his energy levels and recovery after he had been tested and cut out all foods he is allergic to. And, that resonated with me. I loved listening to both Drew and Brittany this past weekendandnbsp;atandnbsp;Expo West, the largest trade show in the natural, organic and healthy products industry, andnbsp;not because he is a pro football player and#40;I work with a number of pro athletes so thatandrsquo;s nothing new to meand# [Read More]

LINSANITY IS HERE... TO STAY!

Linsanity is hereandhellip; I suppose it would be appropriate to address the Linsanity that is running through the basketball world, especially with the New York Knicks.andnbsp; Jeremy Lin, in case you hadnandrsquo;t heard has put the game of basketball in the spotlight for a variety of reasons.andnbsp; First, he played ball at Harvard, a school well known for its academic superiority, not so much in athletics. He was an undrafted player in the NBA, which means, he had a lot tougher road in making a team than a drafted player.andnbsp; He was cut by two NBA teams before he landed in Madison Square Garden with the Knicks.andnbsp; As luck would have it, and#40;or some would say there is no such thing, everything happens for a reasonand#41; after two weeks with the Knicks, he was miraculously pulled from the end of the bench, to a starter. Not that it really matters, but with all the other andldquo;oddsandrdquo; against him, he is of Asian descent.andnbsp; ESPN made us all aware of that when last [Read More]

METTA WORLD PEACE GIVES FASHION ADVICE TO JEREMY LIN

In a league where players are known for their off-court style and swag, Metta World Peace, formerly known as Ron Artest, believes Jeremy Lin is in need of a fashion overhaul. After playing only four games with the Knicks, Lin has become the leagueandrsquo;s latest sensation. Fans have been blown away by his basektball skills but in the eyes of World Peace, he still needs work on his style game. Ken Berger of CBSSports.com shared this Qandamp;A with World Peace, where he described the necessary components for Linandrsquo;s NBA makeover: a new haircut, a pair of shades and leather pants. Did the Lakers talk about him in the locker room? andldquo;Do we talk about him? Yeah, we talk about him. We think he needs a better haircut. I donandrsquo;t like that style. Youandrsquo;re in New York, the fashion capital. Change your haircut, OK? Youandrsquo;re a star now. Wear some shades. Shades, OK? Put down the nerdy Harvard book glasses.
