So, it was an ordinary Tuesday, and I got on the stairmaster and a couple begins talking to me that I've seen a few times in therapy, and proceeding to discuss that they knew I was a basketball player, and went over how they knew who I was. I can see in their eyes, that they have a lot going on in their lives, so I listened very carefully to what they had to say.

He has a hard time getting his wife to work-out and get up amidst the issues they are dealing with, and he said, “my wife has used your motivation and dedication from how you workout at therapy, to inspire her to do the same.” I talked to them for about 40 minutes, and we all shed a few tears, and just discussed the daily struggles that people go through, and how to ove...

KELLY MAZZANTE Foundation...

KELLY MAZZANTE 5K RUN/WALK 9.12.10

I watched the weather channel all week in preparation of my first Kelly Mazzante Foundation Run/Walk this past Sunday, and even though the weather was cold and damp, I am truly happy of the turnout and how the race went. (KMF) I would love to take this opportunity to thank EVERYONE that helped out, donated money, set up signs, blew up balloons, donated auction items and door prizes, etc. So much goes into running an event, but I am sitting here extremely excited about how it all went. I think when I saw the official “Kelly Mazzante Foundation” sign being hung up, it all sunk in what a great thing we created, and how worth it was doing this. Giving back is something I heard growing up and that was instilled in me since day 1, but being fortunate enough to be able to bring it all together and DO IT, was a special moment for myself, and our team. I've been so lucky, with an amazing support system, ...

Everything happens for a reason

EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASONI am sitting here, packing my bags before I head to Phoenix, and just thought to myself how everything has happened for me over the past few months. Will being in Phoenix be a bitter sweet experience? Absolutely, and I knew this moment wold come where I fly into that beautiful city, knowing so many emotions will be a part of this trip.Going to Phoenix to recieve my ring this weekend is something I am really looking forward to, especially since a few months ago I was sitting in the recliner 2 day post-surgery, watching the ceremony from home. I thought during that moment, "there is no way I can get through this, and I felt kind of sorry for myself. "Why me?" But, after going through the last few months, and now running and feeling "normal" again, I look back and realize this all DID happen for a reason. WIth this happening, I've been lucky enough to start the Kelly Mazzante Foundation, plan this 5K, write a chapter in a book for Pen...

BlogHer'10 - Women in Sports Panel

Re-capping BLOGHER '10

Driving into New York City this weekend for the BlogHer event was definately something I was looking forward to participating in. I honestly didnt know exactly what to expect, but I felt as though bringing a professional atheltes perspective to a women in sports panel was a great opportunity. Here is a small recap on some of the issues brought up during our panel...

-equality and the differences in how men and women are treated in various sports

-how parents influence a child's life growing up, both positively and negatively

-homophobia in women's sports

-media coverage on women's professional sports

-how athletes mature and adjust from the high school level, collegiately, and professionally

and amidst all those conversations, I felt the interaction between the speakers and the audience went really well. I didn't expect the hour and a half to go by so quickly. (Also, I thought it was pretty neat the ovation and excitedness...

Kelly Mazzante Foundation...

Kelly Mazzante’s 5K RUN/WALK

“RUN WITH ME”

I would like to take this time to officially annouce that I will be starting the Kelly Mazzante Foundation, having all my proceeds go to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This is definitely something I have wanted to do for a long time, and now I have the opportunity to put it into action. I know that giving back has been something instilled in me, through my time at Penn State, and through the WNBA as well, and having the chance to start a foundation of my own is something I am very proud to be a part of.

My first event will be in Montoursville, PA, as I will host a 5K Run/Walk. All the information will be attached to this blog, so I am hoping anyone who has a chance to help out can and will. I am using the theme, “RUN WITH ME”, as I hope by September 12, I can finally be running too, which was a goal I had in mind when I set the date during my recovery of my ACL. ...

Meeting President Obama

There's something to be said about experiencing a chance to meet the President of the United States, but having that chance twice in a lifetime, is something I will never forget.

In 2007, after we (the Phoenix Mercury) won the world championship, we had a chance to visit the White House and meet President Bush!(sidenote: the Charlotte Sting folded the year before and I got picked up by Phoenix in the dispersal draft. Pretty amazing how things happen!) This weekend, we did the same! My father Louis and I got in the car and drove down to DC to meet up with the Mercury who flew in for this special day.

You never know exactly what to expect, but we had a chance to take the White House tour, smiled over and over for pictures, all awaiting that moment where Obama comes out to congratulate us on winning yet another title in 2009. Its truly been a remarkable experience being on a team to win two world titles in three years, and on top of that,...

First blog for WTS, here we go..

Hi everyone! Kelly Mazzante here, and interestingly enough, my first blog is being written while I'm on an exercise bike doing rehabilition for an ACL surgery. Unfortunately, I suffered my first serious injury while playing overseas in Hungary about four months ago, and quite an eye opening experience. Thinking back though, I realize how lucky I was to have had a successful college career, five years competing overseas, and six years in the WNBA before something like this happened. This whole experience has given me such a different perspective on the sport, life, and just the opportunity I have day in and day out!

So, I'm back in my hometown of Montoursville, Pennsyvlania, population 8,000, two red lights, three hours of therapy a day, and having ALOT of family time. Being away from basketball for the past few months has jump started my creative thinking skills.(Well, atleast in my opinion J) First off, I have been working on starting The Kelly Mazzante Fo...
