I really love watching track & field on TV, and I think ESPN2 did a great job with the coverage. There were a few things missing, such as the women's long jump, and heat 1 of the men's 400m final. Also, I would love to have seen Joanna Hayes on camera, as she is a confident and knowledgeable speaker. I know they used her on the infield to speak to the crowd, but we want to see her at home too!

Women's Long Jump:

We didn't get to watch these women jump, which was disappointing, as I was really looking forward to cheering Women Talk Sports member Brianna Glenn on. This was the only non-televised event, for unknown reasons.

Brittney Reese won in a PR 6.89m (22'7.25") and said, "I was trying for a win or at least a season's best and I came out with both. I am very pleased with today. And I expect good things in Doha....

Canada's Women's Hockey Team: Some Guy with a Website Hits the Nail on the Head

Thanks to @switzerblog for sending me a link to this comic by August J Pollack of someguywithawebsite.com. Check out the video below of the UFC fighter sexually objectifying himself along with his girlfriend Heidi Northcut working out in the nude (except for their Reebok shoes). The video is part of a (so far very successful) viral campaign from Reebok. It has me chuckling for sure.

So rather than spend my day Googling the names of some of the men, I'm going to give you a thorough women's preview and leave the men's preview to others. I'm sure there have been excellent previews written elsewhere that include the men.

The USA Track & Field Indoor Championships take place this Saturday and Sunday in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the Albuquerque Convention Center. There has been some controversy about the choice of this location for a national championship and VISA series event because Albuquerque is at an altitude of approximately one mile. This is an advantage for the sprinting, jumping and throwing events but a disadvantage for the distance events. If this were strictly a national championship event, this wouldn't matter much because the competitors in each event would be facing the same advantage or disadvantage.

Orange County: They sure are strong, smart and bold

Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of meeting with 30 or 40 girls ages 5 to 11 at Girls, Inc. of Orange County. What I had planned was to show them the video of the 2004 US Olympic Trials steeplechase, talk about believing in yourself and dealing with adversity (as related to the stories of different women in the race) and then take them into a larger room with mats to do some core exercises and sprint drills and even a game or two.

My biggest fear was that I wouldn't be able to get them to talk and participate in the discussion after the video. I didn't want them to be bored or uninterested. And as for the exercise activity, did I have too much planned or not enough? So yes, I was a bit nervous.

Before starting the video, I asked if any of the girls knew what the steeplechase is. One girl raised her hand eagerly but then said, "Ummm...I forgot." Then more hands popped up and I realized I was NOT going to have a problem getting this group to talk! They all wanted to guess:...

This Week in Women's Track & Field

It was another exciting weekend of Indoor Track & Field here in the States and abroad. We all had to wait until Sunday to watch a taped Reebok Boston Indoor Games on ESPN2, but with many people tweeting from the meet, we at least got live results and commentary on Saturday.

The weekend started on Wednesday however as Lolo Jones ran a world-leading 7.85 in the 60m hurdles in Düsseldorf. Jones tweeted after the race:

I broke my previous meet record w/a New world lead time of 7.85. Had to refocus from disaster prelim race where I hit hurdle one.
-@followlolo

Jones has had trouble with hitting hurdles in the past, but always has a positive spin on things, and that attitude resulted in a new world leader.

Not to be outdone, Priscilla Lopes-Shliep ran an even faster time (and thus new world leader) and personal record 7.82 in Stuttgart on Saturday.

Also at Stuttgart, Laverne Jones-Ferrette of the Virgin Islands blazed to a world-leading 6.97 seconds in the 60m, just f...

Strikeforce is Going to Have to Shell Out More Dough to Find Someone to Fight Cyborg

I just found out after perusing some posts on BloodyElbow.com that Marloes Coenen only made $2,000 getting pummeled by Cyborg at Strikeforce Miami. I don't know what she would have made if she had beaten Cyborg but it certainly wasn't going to be 6 figures like Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler got. And it should be. Any woman who gets in the ring with Cris Cyborg Santos should get paid 5 figures...and if she actually beats her, should get as much as the highest-paid male because it's Cyborg.

This comes as a shock to many because Wetmore's careful handling of Barringer throughout her career is one for the books, from her freshman year surprise win at the NCAA Championships in the 3000m steeplechase to her absolutely incredible final track season last spring where she set NCAA records for 1500m (3:59.90 - also one of only 4 Americans at the time to ever break 4:00), the indoor mile (4:25.91), indoor 3000m (8:42.03), 5000m (15:01.70), and steeplechase (9:25.54). She then capped it off by placing 5th at the World Championships in the steeplechase, lowering her own American Record to 9:12.50.

There was much hype about who Barringer would choose as her sponsor but the general assumption was that she wouldn't dare leave Wetmore, as he obviously works well with her and who has NCAA records to his own name, includin...

Last-Minute Millrose Games Preview

The indoor track & field season snuck up on me! Here we are at Millrose Games weekend already! A few cool facts about the Millrose Games:

Held annually in Madison Square Garden.
The meet started in 1908 when employees of the Wanamaker's department store formed the Millrose Track Club to hold a meet.
At the 2001 Millrose Games, Stacy Dragila became the first woman to clear 15 feet in the pole vault.
It is the first stop in the USATF VISA Championship Series
In addition to high-quality professional competition, the meet also hosts boys' and girls' mile races, which include some of the nation's top young talent

You can watch the meet on ESPN2 at 8pm EST...LIVE! Our very own Joanna Hayes is the in-house emcee.

Here are the women to watch (full start lists are HERE):
