Melissa Hernandez: Her best to the last bell

Boxing – Saccurato to Face Muay Thai’s Shevchenko for Vacant WIBA title

Melissa "Huracan" Hernandez was born in Puerto Rico and headed north to Bronx, New York. She started fighting to lose weight. She got her self down to 145, signed at 138 and fought her first match in 2003 against Golden Glove champion Jill Emery. Hernandez lost. Hernandez won the 2004 132-lb National PAL Boxing Championship. She won the 2005 Golden Gloves and Florida PAL Championship. Following the wins, in October, 2005, she made her pro debut. Hernandez won the fight by a four-round majority decision over former amateur champion and previously unbeaten Mao Mao Zhang of China. In 2007 she matched up against Layla McCarter for a rematch. After previously losing the first fight, Hernandez came back to win the fight, taking away McCarter's GBU Lightweight title. In 2008, Hernandez took home the WIBA Super Featherweight title. In 2009, she became the center of controversy when she walked out just before her fight against Holly Holm. Isleta Boxing Commission suspended her and then later, after reviewing the circumstances, revoked her suspension. In 2010, Hernandez won an eight round match to crown her the interim WIBA Lightweight title holder.
