 Velez is the first Puerto Rican woman to win a World Boxing Championship.

Velez is a Puerto Rican boxer. She now lives and trains in Hollywood, Florida. In 2001, she won the women's World Boxing Championship. This win made her the first Puerto Rican woman to win a boxing championship. Later in 2001, she won the WIBA super bantamweight title. Her first 10 professional fights were wins. Her first loss came at the WIBA title match. In 2002 she won the IBA version of the world bantamweight title. In 2003, she won the WIBA bantamweight title. In 2004, Velez lost the WIBA bantamweight title after a ten round split decision.
